Gyms and Fitness Centers Re-Open in NYC On September 2, 2020
Written By:
NYC gyms and fitness centers are permitted to re-open today, September 2, 2020, provided they meet the NYC and NYS Department of Health guidelines.
Gym operators must develop a Safety Plan and post it at the gym. They must file a Gym and Fitness Facility Inspection Request and Attestation Form to request an inspection from the NYC Health Department. The inspection will usually be virtual, by video call where a health inspector will confer with the gym manager to confirm compliance with the guidelines and may seek video confirmation of such compliance. Should the gym fail its inspection, it must close immediately and correct whatever violations were observed and apply for re-inspection. For more information, please see NYC's guide titled, Reopening New York City: What Gyms and Fitness Center Operators Need to Know.
Gym operators must also read the NYS guidelines and submit an affirmation form that they understand and will comply with the guidelines. If the above steps are taken, the gym operator may open prior to having the NYC Health Department inspection. For more information, please see the New York State's Interim Guidance for Gyms and Fitness Centers.
Note that indoor pools still must remain closed and indoor fitness classes may not be conducted. For updates please check NYC's Covid-19 information page.
Face coverings (masks) must be worn by both gym employees and patrons at all times while in the gym. The maximum capacity now permitted in gyms is 33% of its pre-COVID-19 maximum allowable capacity. Special rules for social distancing and hygiene must also be met, including remote (preferable) or on-site screening for exposure to COVID-19.
